Seasons - Fall

Landscaping is a year round job, whether you’re planning for next growing season or keeping things green through the Summer heat, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind during each season.

Fall in Kamloops is an opportunity to catch a break from the stifling heat that can define a summer in Interior British Columbia. While the days remain warm, the evenings become increasingly cool. By the end of fall, it will be time to unearth your winter layers and prepare for the snow!

With the growing season nearly behind you, it’s a good idea to keep a record of what grew well in your gardens and in your landscaping, and what you won’t be trying again next year. During the fall there are still several landscaping and lawn care tasks that need to be accomplished to prepare your property for the winter ahead. These tasks include the following:

  • Aerating your lawn.
  • Regular mowing until your lawn stops growing (usually by mid to late October)
  • Continue to water deeply once per week or until growth slows
  • Fall fertilizing
  • Overseeding as necessary after ensuring your soil is at a 6.0 – 6.5 pH level.
  • Close up vegetable gardens
  • Plant trees or shrubs
  • Mulch beds as well as young shrubs and trees
  • Plant bulbs
  • Prepare your irrigation system for the winter

Fall is a great time to continue your landscaping projects. Some trees and shrubs prefer to be planted near the end of the growing season when the soil is still warm enough to establish roots. Planting them in the fall enables them to literally put down roots before the heat of Kamloops growing season begins. Over the course of the growing season, the soil gradually becomes more compacted. Aerating the soil allows the roots of your lawn to reach beneficial air and nutrients, it also helps reduce the negative side effects of thatch. Aerating involves either removing plugs of soil or inserting a spike aerator at regular intervals across your lawn. Both techniques provide the roots the air and nutrients they need to grow deeply and stronger than ever.
